2004 LGBT Local Heroes:
Stephen Kellogg

Gay Men's Buddhist Sangha

Stephen Kellogg
Stephen Kellogg is a pioneer in the gay rights movement. In his early years, Kellogg was president of the Mattachine Society and was one of the founding fathers of Society for Individual Rights. As president of Mattachine, he organized discussion groups, counseling services, progressive multi-denominational religious support groups and legal services for gays and lesbians. Kellogg's leadership raised awareness and civil rights efforts. In the late 70s as HIV spread throughout the gay community, Stephen worked with the Theosophical Society to establish healing and meditation groups to serve those affected by the disease.

Today, at age 86, Stephen is still active in the gay community; he hosts weekly meetings for the gay Buddhist Sangha, he is poet and he continues to volunteer at Laguna Honda.
